“It’s finally time to experience the world with our new happy lives”

Mohegan Sun for a day trip…

Being located on Long Island New York there is the advantage of having endless destinations in reach due to the fact that I am pretty much in the center of the universe. Until I met my beautiful girlfriend, I never knew how much fun a ferry ride to Connecticut could be. This journey is absolutely one of my favorites, AND it’s available to us all the time.

GETTING TO THE FERRY

This part of the trip is easy for me being that I am located on the North Fork of Long Island (there are plenty of stories coming about this place, trust me!!). To quickly describe this area, imagine going from the suburbs to vast green farmland in less than 2 hours. There is winery after winery after brewery at every turn. The chaos of one county on Long Island gives way to the perfect feeling of “vacation” on a vineyard.

Leaving from my girlfriend’s house its a short 15 minute drive to the Orient Point Ferry. The first time I got to this boat I was thrilled to find out that a round trip ticket to another state will cost you less than $50 per person. At this point one can realize that besides gambling, the cost of a boat to Mohegan Sun might be the bulk of the days expenses!

NOT YOUR AVERAGE FERRY BOAT

Once you get on the ferry it’s obvious that this is not the Staten Island Ferry. The boat is huge with cars being shuttled in the lower area. Once you enter the seating area you are met with a deli serving made to order sandwiches. Coffee and morning fare is available, and there is no less than 40 booth style seating all around.

Being greeted by the overhead speaker welcoming you aboard you will also learn for only $3 dollars there is high speed internet available for your cross-sound voyage. None of these things apply to us as we open the cooler bag and are enjoying Michelob Ultras while talking amongst ourselves. Again as mentioned, spending time with your soulmate means being happy in any environment as long as you are together…..this just happens to be the funnest travel to a casino I know.

Also included on this ferry are spacious modern bathrooms, an awesome bar with live sports on TV and even a small museum section with World War II history. Very cool environment indeed.

CONNECTICUT ARRIVAL

When pulling into the dock it’s then time to hit the Uber app to get the ride on its way to the port location. Once the short walk down the gangplank is complete there is about 100 yards to the ride-share pickup point, then there is only about 20 minutes until your arrival at Mohegan Sun. There is nothing much to say about the scenery leading you up to the doors, but you are in a state where the main attraction is the casino and not the surroundding area.

THE CASINO/ RESORT

Entering this Native American Casino/Resort can only be described as…. Am I in a Tee Pee? It’s actually separated into 2 sides and both are giant circles. In between the 2 casinos is a vast mall full of shopping and restaurants. On one of our trips over to the resort it was actually St Patricks day which led us to a packed Irish pub for stout and shots of whiskey. I very fun environment!

Being in the casino itself, instead of pumping twenty dollar bills into a slot machine, we usually elect to sit at a sports bar, put a few bucks into a Video Poker Machine, and drink for free as we slow play our minimal risk investment. There is ample time to place sports bets in their book, and our bartenders have always been funny characters.

The other good thing to report on this property would be the fun way in which you can just walk around and be entertained by the theme. Holding the hand of my hot girlfriend and walking from one side of the casino to the other is enough to keep us entertained. There are times when we find ourselves just sitting in the lobby section of the hotel and looking at the water feature over the bar below.

THE TRIP HOME

The best part of this trip to Mohegan Sun is that it is a quick commute, and you get to spend the day with the person you love just chilling, drinking, and laughing. All the way up to the boat ride home we find ourselves playing card games in the bar section of the ferry, and knowing we can get an early bed time after a busy and fun day!

Remember that traveling after our divorces isn’t about jumping on a plane and going far away. It’s about enjoying the time with the person that fulfills every need your ex spouse didn’t! Happy travels!
